As part of the expansion of the world championship, there was an increase in the number of tournaments and ranking systems offering qualification places.
Places were now offered to the winner of the Challenge Tour , the top two from the Development Tour where previously only the winner had qualified , the top four of the new Asian Tour , and the top American and Canadian players on the North American Championship Darts Circuit.
Tahuna Irwin , who won the New Zealand qualifier, had to withdraw after being denied entry to the UK, and subsequently being banned from entry, when attempting to compete in the PDC World Youth Championship.
His place was given to the New Zealand runner-up, Craig Ross. The tournament also saw two tournaments to qualify female players for the tournament.
Stephen Burton , Adam Hunt and Aden Kirk took the three places, all three of them making their debuts.
The top quarter of the draw saw number one seed Michael van Gerwen easily reach the quarter-final, knocking Alan Tabern out in the second round despite having beer thrown at him during the walk on, before consecutive 4—1 victories over Max Hopp and former world champion Adrian Lewis.
In the second quarter, fourth seed Gary Anderson had to come through last-set deciders against Jermaine Wattimena and Chris Dobey to reach the quarter-final, while fifth-seed Daryl Gurney was eliminated in the third round by semi-finalist Jamie Lewis.
In the third quarter, reigning champion Rob Cross defeated Jeffrey de Zwaan in the second round, before beating Cristo Reyes 4—0 in the third round.
In the fourth quarter, the four top seeds were eliminated in the second round, with third-seed Peter Wright losing to Toni Alcinas , sixth-seed Gerwyn Price being eliminated by Nathan Aspinall , eleventh-seeded Ian White losing to South African Devon Petersen and Brendan Dolan whitewashing fourteenth seed Joe Cullen.
Aspinall defeated Petersen, with Dolan getting a 4—1 win over van de Pas to reach the quarter-final. In the first semi-final, Aspinall played Smith.
Smith won the first two sets without dropping a leg, before Aspinall came back to make it 2—2. Each player won one of the next two sets to make it 3—3, before Smith won two consecutive sets 3—1 and the final set 3—0 to win the match and qualify for the first World Championship final of his career.
Smith scored 17 s, the most by a player in a World Championship semi-final. In the second semi-final, Anderson played van Gerwen in a repeat of the final.
After van Gerwen won the first set in a last-leg decider, he then won twelve of the next thirteen legs to quickly take a 5—0 lead in the first-to-six match.
Anderson managed to avoid the whitewash by winning the sixth set, but van Gerwen completed the rout in the next set, qualifying for the final for the fourth time in his career.
Smith lost the fourth set after missing four darts at double 12 in the decider, but won the fifth set 3—2 to avoid the whitewash and took the sixth set 3—0.
Van Gerwen restored his three-set advantage with a 3—1 win in the seventh set. Smith missed three darts for the eighth set, which van Gerwen won to go one set away from victory.
The ninth set went to a deciding leg, which Smith won to prolong the match. Van Gerwen took the first two legs in the tenth set, and missed one dart for the championship in the third leg; in the next, he hit double 16 to take the set and win the World Championship for the third time.

The math these guys have to do it their heads on the fly not to mention their throwing skill is really a thing to watch. Countdown for semifinals there are no more afternoon matches left.
Chizzy is one of the most innocent people on tour. The crowd booed him when he was on a double to go because they wanted the underdog to prolong the match.
He just had a bit of a laugh afterwards, nothing else. I heard the crowd booing him today and I was pretty shocked. What did he actually do?
Seen an ironic reaction from him at the end of a set, but I thought that was because the crowd booed him.
Side effect of too many upsets. Fair play to Humphries though. Hope Smith doesnt get upset aswell now. Man, I wish I could get more of my friends into this in the US.
I think the timing shift hurts it but god, this is such an incredible sport. Just curious, how much does the pdc make from the fans at a single session at ally pally.
This includes tickets and beers etc. Anyone know what was happening with the crowd those last couple games? At certain points more than half the audience were looking and chanting at the back left of the Ally Pally, completely ignoring the darts.
There was some clown dressed as Peter Wright dancing around and getting the crowd to chant. Imagine buying a ticket for Ally Pally and spending the full session chanting at someone dressed as Peter Wright.
There was also a good amount of back and forth chants between the tables and the seats crowd. Nothing that awful really, had some awkward celebrations but in fairness I think he won a set at that time.
But the handshake at the end was unsportsmanlike. He purposefully stopped his walk to get the darts to cheer in front of his face it was so cringey Joyce just laughed t off.
Wade has acted bad or unsportsmanlike on stage many times. However the antics against Asada recently really turned public opinion against him.
Has been like this for the whole tournament. That side of the bracket was really open and I expected either he or Mervyn King would end up in the quarters because of it.
Apparently Anderson has back problems again so if thats the case I dont see him beating MvG at all. Great fightback from Aspinall. What a contrast seeing Alcinas-vdPas and then in the same session Lewis losing with a average Anyone watching on DAZN?
Maybe they only have permission from sky sports or whoever to air the match and not the interviews? MvG is too good but Lewis has had a good redemption year after the R1 upset and pushing incident.
Hope he can continue in if he goes out here. Before the tournament he wasnt great form but after watching his games vs Reyes and especially De Zwaan, hes the strongest player in the bottom half by far.
Smith is very good but a bit of a choker as well. Cross is the opposite, he raises his game with more pressure on him. Henderson was in the zone. Almost went for another treble 20, then realized that would have been a mistake considering his score.
As far as I can tell you can only find the sessions on youtube but with Dutch commentators. Search "darts" filter on "week" and pick whatever day you missed.
Theres a guy streaming on twitch with the english feed. Check the dartstreams attached to the stickied post. Its good quality too.
Ive missed this cross. Only played like this since last years wc in that tournament in australia or nz. Such a joy to watch when hes playing like this.
Wade who won his last game for his country and by extent the English crowd got an excellent reception.

Nobody wants to be on the receiving end of this domination! Anderson is the final. You can say to him and he will reel off the finishing route from hours and hours of practice.
Maybe he will be there for the finals. Gary was on fire today. Can you find me a same one for the Final? Well done Joyce, what a great win for him.
What did he do this time? Still should win though. But I love that Lewis is putting up a fight. He played all out. I think BBC America really dropped the ball on this.
All of their sins are really advanced. Im Kicking myself now. If he plays like this he can beat Van Gerwen. Always been a fan.
